Dear Parents,

Your children dazzled and delighted us these past two weeks as we worked on getting to know each other, learning classroom rules and procedures, and settling in to our daily routine.  This week, the fun begins!  We are beginning instruction in all the subject areas, and your children will be assigned weekly homework.

We give homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, it extends and generalizes concepts, provides practice time, teaches responsibility, and it helps students develop positive study habits.  We feel that parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children. Therefore, we ask that parents make homework a top priority, provide necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time, provide praise and support, and contact us if they notice a problem.

We will assign homework weekly for reading and math. Homework will be comprised weekly of two math assignments and two reading assignments. Additionally, we ask that 30 minutes of nightly reading and math fact practice occur. Math and reading assignments will be completed online; if your child does not have access to the internet, please let us know immediately.  Math assignments will be found on www.sumdog.com. Reading assignments will be found on www.readworks.org. These assignments will be available Friday afternoons and are to be completed prior to arriving at school the following Friday morning.  These assignments will be taken for credit towards a quarterly grade.

We expect our students to give their very best effort on their homework. We encourage students to do the work on their own. Parents should help their children with homework if a problem arises, but only after children have tried their best to solve it on their own. In no case, however, should parents do homework for their children. We believe in each and every student!

If there is a legitimate reason why a student is not able to finish homework, please send a note (Bloomz message) on the day the homework is due stating the reason it was not completed. We realize that things do come up during the year. As always, if you have any questions along the way, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Thank you,

The 3rd Grade Team
