Hurricane Helene
9/25/24 8:00 a.m. update
The Town of Oakland has officially declared a State of Local Emergency as Hurricane Helene intensifies and is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane. This declaration, effective September 24th until further notice, allows Town staff to swiftly approve expenditures and issue special orders to prioritize public safety.

Town Operations
- Following, OCPS, Oakland Avenue Charter School is closed Thursday, Sept. 26
- Following Orange County Government, Town Hall is closed on Thursday, Sept. 26 due to the storm.
- The Oakland Nature Preserve is closed on Thursday, Sept. 26 due to the storm.
- The Healthy West Orange Arts & Heritage Center is is closed on Thursday, Sept. 26 due to the storm.
- The Oakland Farmers Market is postponed on Thursday, Sept. 26 and will be rescheduled to Thursday, October 3.
Trash Collection
At this time there are no changes to Friday regular pick-up. The Town is actively coordinating with Waste Management and will share updates about any changes to waste collection services on our website and Facebook page.
Self Serve Sand Bags
In preparation for heavy rains, sandbags are available for Oakland residents to help protect your homes.
10 bags, per household. Please bring a photo ID.

Wed. Sept. 25th: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Following OCPS, OACS will be closed on Thursday, September 26th to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and families.

All schools will be closed on Thursday, September 26th.
Traffic Lights
Per Orange County: If you are on the road, you are urged to drive with caution. The County is still experiencing wind and rain. If you approach an intersection and see the traffic signal is not functioning normally, follow these rules: bit.ly/3fQ7GFY. Residents can report inoperable traffic lights by dialing 3-1-1 or 407-836-3111.
- Light Out: Treat like a 4-way stop
- Flashing Red: Treat like a stop sign
- Flashing Yellow: Slow down and use extreme caution
